The National Service Scheme (NSS) is an Indian government-sponsored public service program conducted by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports of the Government of India. Popularly known as NSS, the scheme was launched in Gandhiji's Centenary year in 1969. Aimed at developing student's personality through community service, NSS is a voluntary association of young people in Colleges The programme aims to instill the idea of social welfare in students, and to provide service to society without bias. NSS volunteers work to ensure that everyone who is needy gets help to enhance their standard of living and lead a life of dignity. In doing so, volunteers learn from people in villages how to lead a good life despite a scarcity of resources. it also provides help in natural and man-made disasters by providing food, clothing and first aid to the disaster's victims.
After witnessing the battle Solferino Jean Henry Dunant quoted"By Thy power, let there be peace, O God!", and this led to the formation of Red Cross Society. As every tree grows from a small seed, the Red Cross society has grown in stages. The fundamental principles of the Youth Red Cross (YRC) society are humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality.
The overall function of the NSS and YRC Advisory Committee at the college level is to advise on the various activities of NSS and YRC based on the immediate and urgent needs of the students and the community. The two committees meet regularly at least four times a year.
The NSS and YRC volunteers of Stella Mary’s College of Engineering attended the “First Responder Program” conducted by CBDRM, Kanyakumari District on 30/01/2019.
Blood Donation Camps have been conducted by the NSS and YRC Units of Stella Mary’s College of Engineering on 04/09/2019. As a result of conducting these camps, 80 units of blood have been donated to the government hospital. In appreciation of our endeavour, the college has received Appreciation Award.
The NSS and YRC volunteers of Stella Mary’s College of Engineering create a lot of awareness on the importance of tree plantation inside the college campus. In addition to this, a tree plantation programme “Festive Green” had been conducted inside the college campus on 06/09/2019 on behalf of Onam Festival celebration.
A Voter’s Awareness programme had been organized by Collector Office, Nagercoil, in Stella Mary’s College of Engineering on 10/04/2019. 121 Students attended the Programme. The programme was very useful for the students as the officer gave a small demo of EVM Voting Machine.
A guest lecture on “Importance of NSS” was organized by the NSS and YRC unit of Stella Mary’s college of Engineering on 19/08/2019. All the NSS and YRC Students from all the Department attended the Programme.
The NSS and YRC volunteers of Stella Mary’s College of Engineering created a lot of awareness on Dengue in the surrounding areas on 13/09/2018. In addition to this, an awareness rally was conducted in the nearby villages.
