Enlightening the academic skills of the students the college involves them to actively participate in various club activities. Effective nurturing, growth and development of the students are considered as core values at the institute. This is of prime importance as it helps students to develop their personality, meet the market needs, and excel in the dynamic global environment. To empower the students, they are supported and facilitated through various capability enhancement and development schemes. The capability enhancement and development schemes are the stimulating factors in getting the students corporate-ready and become a responsible social citizen.
All departments of the College have various mechanisms to guide its students for competitive examinations. To enhance and inculcate career information among students, the faculties are continuously providing valuable inputs. This gives them a platform to make necessary decision regarding career alternatives available in their respective fields. Time and again the departments organize various lectures by experts in their respective fields. Books related to preparations are available in the department and college library along with e-books that are provided by the subject faculties respectively. Dedicated classes are also taken in some departments to prepare and counsel the students for the examinations.
These classes have helped the students to create awareness about various competitive examinations like TNPSC, RRB, IBPS, UPSC, IT companies and get placements. Also the number of students appearing for these exams is on increase.
It is aimed at helping the students to determine their strengths, values, and interests in order to make choices regarding their career. The college career guidance and placement cell offers resources, events, job postings throughout the year.
Students of SMCE undergo soft skills training programs to build self-confidence & adaptability and shape behavior and attitude. The soft skill training helped the students to overcome the fear of facing public speaking and it also enhanced their communication and Leadership skills through group discussion and role play. This kind of training would give them better placement opportunities and also help them to grow in their career much easier. The Training and Placement cell organizes communication skill development program for First years and soft skills training program for Second and Third year Students. For final year Students, Sessions on Resume Preparation, Session on Employability Skills, Group Discussions, Mock GD and Mock Interviews are conducted periodically. This would help them to improve skills like organizational skills, effective leadership skills, change management, presentation abilities, communication skills, team management skills, problem solving strategies and problem solving using critical thinking and creativity.
The college strives to develop specific competencies of the students that may contribute to their academic and professional success. Remedial teaching is practiced to make up the deficiency of slow learners. To bridge the knowledge gap of the students following strategies are taken by the institution. Slow learners among the students are identified and given special attention. Remedial classes are organized for such slow learners. Teachers arrange for personal contact sessions for the betterment of the slow learners and eliminate their weak points. The teacher’s guide them to prepare model answers by providing books and reading materials. The slow learners are weak in basic skills (reading, writing, and mathematics), face difficulty in comprehending abstract ideas, and are careless. We make use of activities, techniques and practice to eliminate weaknesses or deficiencies that the slow learner is known to have.
The students classified into groups, each consisting of not more than 25 students in each subject and each group may be placed under the charge of one teacher. The responsibility is fixed and teachers are in a position to develop rapport with the assigned group and monitor the progress of the students. Coordinator is responsible to ensure effective implementation of the coaching programme, in addition to actual teaching in the classes.
StellaMarys college of Engineering has a language laboratory with audio or audio-visual as an aid in modern language teaching. The well equipped lab is furnished in an air- conditioned environment. The software help the students in their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. The university offers two courses, namely, Communicative English and Technical English for the first year students. It also offers practical courses such as Interpersonal Skills: Listening and Speaking, Professional Communication, Advanced Reading & Writing, and Communications and Soft Skills Laboratory for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th year students as per the curriculum. Soft skills and Communication classes are conducted to help the students to use multimedia facilities to improve their language skills and thereby become employable.
For the betterment of the students, they should have communication skills in English. Their communication skills are noticeable in an interview, society. Students learn English by using the communication lab which helps them to speak with exact pronunciation. Even though the students are good at English, their stage fear and poor body language do not allow them to get good opportunities. Some people may be good at writing but may have problems speaking in front of the audience. Some may be good at interpersonal communication, but not good in making presentations.
English Lab provides an opportunity to learn English. The students can listen to the lesson material at a level set by the Instructor and also receive guidance from the teacher. Headsets are given to all the students to hear accurately and pronounce correctly.
SMCE regularly organizes and conducts bridge course – an orientation programme for the first year students of engineering streams in the following disciplines (English, Physics, chemistry and basic Engineering) and for the lateral entrance. The objective of induction programme is to bridge the gap that would possibly exist between the academia and the newly joined engineering aspirants in terms of orienting their academic environ and partly eliminate the fear factor that might cripple their understanding into becoming qualitative engineers with a socialite concern and social responsibility.
Students are also introduced to different clubs that are operated in the campus (NCC, NSS etc.) which would empower them in discovering their hidden potentials and enable them to grow into matured, full-fledged overall personalities. This enhancement and development programme is devised for overall grooming and enhancement of the students’ fraternity with a special punctuation for students from rural and semi rural community.
Our college organizes regular Yoga and Meditation camps for students in order to improve balance, flexibility and strength and also overcome stress. This has helped in improving both the physical and mental health of our students. Every year, International Yoga Day (21st June) is observed in the college by organizing Yoga camp. Faculties are also trained to become counselors to address student issues. This has had a dramatic effect in the mindset of both the staff and students of the institution. They have become sharper with improved concentration. Yoga has improved their focus and has provided inner peace. Greater sense of purpose, increased emotional stability and feelings of happiness are seen in the inmates of the college.
In our college Student’s mentors offer personal counseling to all students. Students often encounter problems and difficulties which needs a timely resolution. Through the Mentor Mentee Program, each student (mentee) gets an opportunity to interact with a faculty member (mentor) for their personal counseling.
